Released: 2016

Genre: Alternative R&B

6LACK, a promising artist coming out of Atlanta, has gifted us with his long awaited debut album. An album that is a diary; a come-up story on where he is in his life. He talks about freedom hence the title of this project. The content deals with issues of being trapped and controlled by a record label, failed past relationships, self-love, and intimacy. The opening track, "Never Know", has an airy, trap beat and is a compelling intro due to his story of self-reliance. "Old label wasn't talkin' bout nothing. Meanwhile I'm getting ready for a run." This track is a bold punch of believing in oneself and finally deciding it's ready to fulfill a better situation. Even with his leap of faith, he still encounters his own set of "PRBLMS". Now this song in particular is great because 6LACK does not shy away from his own faults in his relationship with he's grown to be less fond of. It's refreshing to hear man detail and accept that he is not perfect and refuses to blame his significant other. This is one of those tracks that will become an anthem for men who relate to dealing with irrational, lazy girls, and trying to understand themselves in the process. 6LACK and I both share the same favorite song on this project which is "Free". Dope track! The beat is my favorite, and this is the first time, in my opinion, 6LACK's raspy voice shines; even though he's free now, his tone gives the impression that everything he has been through exhausted him, and I appreciate the emotion on this track. "Learn Ya", "MTFU", and "Luving U", are similar tracks with different themes. They all detail his romantic relationships where he confesses his love, cheats on his girl with her friend, and finds that he really doesn't want to lose himself in the midst of another person. This guy has been through a lot of shit! These songs are unique in their own right. For some reason I imagine a group of white girls singing the hooks to these track in their cars. IDK but they have a pop feel them which I actually admire. Moving on, the rest of this album deal with the same themes, and then it closes with "Alone/EA6", a track similar to the opening. 6LACK uses recorded diologue between him and executives from his old label. He boldly and desperately explains to them that he doesn't one to make any music that does not represent him. He doesn't want to become just a hit record whereas people forget who he is at the core. This song is him putting his foot down, and is inspirational and relates to so many artist's struggles with labels that refuse to negotiate with the people they sign. It's pitiful, and I'm glad he chose to expose and express his feelings on the matter. Overall, this album is dope, moody, and real. If you've had any power struggle or relationship ever, then you'll relate to this album. I can't help but notice The Weeknd's influence on 6LACKS's sound, so if you enjoyed Trilogy, then this project will not disappoint you. Give it a listen!
