Smino, a St. Louis native rapper and singer, blessed us with one of the best R&B records of this year! Blkswn is an eighteen track album filled with themes of romance, black pride, bad habits, and relationships. The album gives off the idea that it was made as a fun party among the producers and collaborators. It has bright tracks, but it mainly exudes a moody, vibey aura that's perfect for riding around late night in a car alone or with someone you love. It has a classic, but contemporary feel; "silk pillows" has an almost neo-soul sound, "anita" (an ode to black women) provides funk elements that make you want to get up and dance. "Anita" and "Netflix & Dusse" make me feel like wearing bright colorful clothes and hold hands while spinning around in circles with the person I love. You can hear the confidence coming from his vocals on every record. It is an impressive example of a debut album, especially by someone who has not popped off yet. I think the main highlight of this whole project is the lyrics! Smino's pen game is dope! In a time where storytelling, lyricism, and wordplay don't shine, he really makes you appreciate his talent much more. He is a new artist, but this project makes him seem like a vet. That could be attributed to his background in music, where he is a professional drummer, and his grandfather was a notable jazz artist in St.Louis. The production on this project is outstanding, crisp, refreshing, and done very well. Shout out to the musicians that worked on it! Smino is like a brown-skin chance the rapper (and I mean that in the best way possible). If you like Outkast, Musiq Soulchild, and Chance the Rapper then I'm confident you'll really enjoy this project! Smino has charisma, talent, southern swag, and incredible confidence; I can't wait to see what he does next!
