So Ms. Amala finally released her sophomore album, and I am thrilled! I remember listening to her debut, Amala, last year while taking a shower. Music and bathing is a tradition for me, and after i fell in love with "moo" and found out she's a Libra like me, I had to pay attention! I'm so glad I did. Amala represents the type of artist she is. She is bubbly, energetic, sensual, raw, and very fun. Her music is carefree while being creative and versatile. Now that her brand has caught onto the general public people are now recognizing her as breath of fresh air. Someone who is in her whole lane while not taking herself too seriously. She writes and has produced a few her songs. Although she is signed to RCA, her overall appeal is of an indie artist marking her own path, so we have no choice but to stan!
Hot Pink is very girly, bossy, and sexy. "Cyber Sex" is sexy and playful. It's kind of a tease which I can appreciate. It's like the foreplay before the real thing. This track is one you listen to when doing your makeup and getting cute for a date. I don't see myself just playing this one for leisure or background music. No, I will be playing this song for a reason ;).
"Rules" reiterates how versatile she is as an artist. They sound completely different from one another. "Rules" is more hip hop, and her flow and cadence is totally different. Most people reference Kendrick Lamar for "rules", but I mostly hear Lil Wayne's influence. From the beat to her raspy flow. I could totally hear Wayne tearing up that instrumental! He should do a remix or something. Since she released the cat mob inspired video, the song as been in heavy rotation.
I like the rhythm of "Won't Bite", but I really do not care for the simple lyricism from her. However, I do love that two of my faves collaborated. Smino is another versatile and creative Libra! Sorry guys, I love astrology too much to be quiet on our greatness!
As for track #4, Butters Scotch from South Park should be given a shout out. It would've been cool if Doja gained inspiration for "bottom bitch" when watching Butters be the best 4th grade pimp he could be. Actually, Doja said the hook for this song came out of nowhere. She heard the beat with the 3 Doors Down sample and felt compelled to sing and rap about a bottom bitch. Now when I heard this song, I was mad confused. Is she talking about a best friend, a girlfriend, or a real prostitute? If she is singing about a prostitute, why? See, Doja doesn't take herself too seriously, and this song is an example of that. It took me a minute to get into it, but I actually like the song due to its sound. I like that it is different for her, and I also appreciate her releasing this as a single because it doesn't sound like anything else she's done so far.
"Like That" ft. Gucci Mane is a song for the summer. I visualize Doja in a drop top on a ling road on the way to the function. Feel me? Oh and I glad Gucci gave Doja some love since he's a veteran in the game. The hook reminds me of August Alsina's 2013 single "Numb". It sounds like a sped of version of that song. Will this track be in heavy rotation? Hmm, maybe when the sun and heat are out! :)
"Talk Dirty" really showcases Doja's ability to feature herself on songs. She's again singing, rapping, and doing her own background vocals which is impressive to say the least. Subject matter here is self explanatory. She's just expressing her love for a man to say them freaky things to her. I must say I love the flow, arrangement, and instrumental. It makes me want to put on pink lipstick and go on a sunny road trip, then hit a luxurious night lounge and seduce a man with my mind.
"What's your addiction? Is it money, is it cars, is it weed?" Oh wait, wrong song...
"Addiction" is sonically different from Kanye's classic cut from Late Registration, but has some of the same themes. Including a lighthearted quest for sex, but also the desire to be "under the influence." She starts the song with what seems like a phone message to someone she is pursuing. She expresses that she needs this person; she wants the union back because there's an itch she just can't scratch. It's actually an introspective song since she mentions how she likes to call her man "daddy" since the real one had up and left.
Not all women who do this have absent fathers; however, I do appreciate her perspective within her lyrics. She then beautifully sings, "you can relate to broken girls. I've been a day without it, I'm proud of myself. Baby, can you break the curse? I'm so gone, I believe in magic." As you can imagine, the lyrics illustrate something deeper than just needing sex only for the physical. She likes this person cause more than likely he's broken too since he can relate to her which I totally understand. Men who have perfect upbringings and little to no traumas are foreign to me. Gimme somebody who can empathize even if its a little unhealthy, right?
I really love how playful the song is even when the lyrics are kind of sad. That is how life is sometimes. Then the song leads into "Streets" which I was so excited to hear the first time because I immediately noticed the B2K sample from their song of the same title from the "You Got Served" album which I had in 5th grade! I will always be a fan of B2K, and I was super stoked that either her or the producer decided to sample them! Everyone is killing the 90's by continously sampling and basically remixing classics.
Doja did something different by leaning on the 2000's for inspiration which adds to her uniqueness. Anyway, I love the hard and dark instrumental because the darkness further moves her desire for her lover. She's never met a person like the man she loves, and she'd be damned if anything interferes with their relationship. It's a profound statement, so I appreciate her protective energy on it.
"Shine" is one of those feel good songs that you can bank head bounce to! Ms.Cat is skating inn this track so well. Her flow is dope, the lyrics are at least creative regarding sex and diamonds. That's one thing about Doja is that her simplest topics are usually still creative lyrically.
"Better Than Me" is her continuing the same subject on "Shine" where she bragging on her sex appeal. She declares that these other girls ain't got it like she got it. Na' mean? Play this song when you're getting ready to put it down on your S.O. Actually play this whole album! Hot Pink is a bop record in the sense that every song can be played at a club or house party. I'll be honest. Our generation has a plethora of club bangers and hype songs; however, most of them are lyrically boring where most rappers try to sound like one another. Doja just sounds like herself AND she's dope with her pen. Even before Hot Pink, she lyrically shined on her mixtapes and debut album, Amala. Oh and her music makes you feel good. I love when both men and women can enjoy listening to an artist, and fortunately we have one to celebrate!
