Artist: Lizzo

Album: Cuz I love You

Genre: Pop/R&B

Released: 2019

Well, what can I say about this album? Well, I do not like this album at all. Actually it has been very hard for me to start and finish this review. Only because re-listening to this album only made me want to put it off more. That's how much I do not like this album.

This just isn't the right music for me! Listen, I grew up listening to the explicit version of Eminem's first major album, The Slim Shady LP. I listened to this mas rap vivid rhymes about killing his wife, shrooms, and anything else messed up you could think of. It's probably my favorite album by the Emcee. Sooooooooo if you've ever listened to TSSLP then you would understand why Cuz I Love You isn't my cup of tea. I enjoy aggressive hip hop and sultry, layered R&B. I do not particularly get into pop music. Especially pop that tries to mimic rap music. However, there were a few that were okay. Let's get into the tracks I kinda like and the ones I absolutely hate shall we?

So, my review isn't to say that she is not talented or boring. I truly believe that Lizzo is very gifted, entertaining, and a very good musician. She just doesn't make music for me. I am glad that she is finally getting recognition after being a professional musician for over ten years! I mean the girl deserves it; she waited so long!. Well, now she's here and representing for all realms of beauty but mostly the big black girls that watch musicals, may still use Afro Sheen, and enjoy disco and Britney Spears.

Let's talk about "juice". This shit sounds like it should've been out in 2010 when Nicki Minaj was making annoying pop records. Is it just more or does it seem like Lizzo is trying desperately to prove to us that she's cute and fabulous? This is song I would never listen to on my own time. Sounds like a song mall stores would play when you're shopping and can't find your size. "IT AIN"T MY FAAAUUUULT" that this song sucks! Moving on...

Oh snap, "juicy" by doja cat is playing. Hmm, interesting. At least my girl Doja sounds convincing and confident when saying she keeps it "juicy, juicy". She sounds matter-of-fact instead of trying to sound like she's masking her insecurities. Now, Lizzo probably believes whole-heartedly believes every lyric she spit, but it doesn't always to genuine to me.

Biiiiitch lets talk about "like a girl! I hate this fucking song! It sounds like it's pandering to women and girls, and that's the same reason I could never get into "in my feelings" by Drake. It just sounds fake. It makes me feel like I should be shopping at baby gap or Osh Kosh Begosh or whatever it's called. It's childish and not uplifting. I actually enjoy the lyrics to this track. It's just the sonics I hate so much about it. She calls Serena Williams "Serena Willy". This song makes me cringe. Moving on....

"Crybaby" surprisingly doesn't irk my nerves. The instrumental is pretty groovy, and her Prince impersonation isn't half bad. This is what I call bar music. The tracks I do like are still ones I would play by choice. Lizzo just isn't an artist I'd have on any of my playlists on Spotify, but she's talented as hell.

"Jerome" is a record I dedicate to Rufus. If you know, you know.

"Tempo" sounds authentic. It's energetic and bold. Missy Elliot does what she always does on this track. You can't go wrong with a legend, and there's a few curse words in this one so I can enjoy it.

"Lingerie" is probably the best song on this album. She feels honest in her expression of her own sexiness and confidence. I really enjoyed the instrumental to this one as well. This one sounded classic in its own way.

"Cuz I love You" Is a piercing ballad that has remnants of classical love songs of the 1960's. She's real. She's hurt. She's even funny too.

Overall, I write Lizzo off as just an artist that doesn't cater to an audience member like me. It's just not my cup of tea, so I give her pass as a talented singer and musician that's just not for me. I wish her the best.

Quatables: "Once upon a time I was a hoe. I don't even wanna hoe no mo."
