Artist: Tinashe

Album: Nightride

Released: 2016

Genre: Alternative R&B

Late night in November 2016, I got a notification that Tinashe released a new project. Needless to say I was elated! Finally the princess has come to show her fans some love! I listened to it all in one night, and I played it over and over again. I still listen to the songs on this album today; it'll never get old. She is making a stamp and putting her mark on r&b and inevitably moving the genre forward. This project is dark, sexy, strange, and sonically pleasing. The opening track has Tinashe taking us on a vocal journey, and she comes full force with a declaration that she will live her live as she wishes. Nothing is going to get in the way of her aspirations. Being that she is now signed to a major label, RCA, I can see how this song is relevant to the current behind-the-scenes battle she must be having with the company. "If it's my life, ain't nobody gonna tell me how to live it. They can see it the way I see it through my eyes", she softly, but confidently sings over a smooth beat. She starts off with singing then raps, then sings again. It's truly an entertaining track. "Sunburn" is my favorite piece; it makes me fell like standing under a waterfall letting my hair get wet and filling myself with optimism. Ultimately, the song is about remaining optimistic while facing doubt, a notion that is necessary to survive. "Sacrifices", the trap feel track produced by Metro Boomin, changes the pace and gets us in the mood for a sexy encounter with a lover. Her single "Company" is a friends-with-benefits theme song accompanied by a music video that showcases Tinashe's dancing talent and is reminiscent of Aaliyah. The song "Soul Glitch" stood out to me the most partially because I couldn't understand what she was saying, so that made it quite mysterious. Plus, the production on this track along with her vocals are both intoxicating. Just like her debut Aquarius, Tinashe put some party anthems on this record. "Party Favors" and "Ride of Your Life" are fun records to bump in the whip or play at parties and turn up. Also, she ended this album with a ballad just like her debut. "Ghetto Boy" is a Shakespeare inspired melody of a love affair between two people of differing social classes. Tinashe expresses her love for the man involved and reassures him that she won't hurt him. She explained that the idea of a man who is on the come-up and not all together yet appeals to her. She wants to be on his journey of becoming a better version of himself which I find admirable and sweet. Overall, I like to call this project an album full of bops! Do yourself a favor and give this project a listen!
