Artist: Tinashe
Album: Aquarius
Released: 2014
Genre: R&B
Tinashe was on the rise of fame in 2014 with her hit "2 On", and within the same year she released her debut album Aquarius. Now when "2 On" came out, I didn't know this girl, and I really didn't care for this song due to the reckless message behind hit. However, the song did grow on me because it's rather catchy, and once I dug dip into her other music, I fell in love. Tinashe is a breath of fresh air. She combines classic r&b with the modern sounds of today, and it works! Her voice is soft and sultry, but she does offer some dance records on this project like "All Hands on Deck". She's a versatile artist with the majority of this album taking you on a vibed out getting to know her. She covers topics dealing with romance, believing in her self, partying, and the pressures of fame. It's an impressive debut, and you can definitely tell her influences and see how her style relates to artists of her upbringing. The track "How Many Times" sounds like a 90's track from Janet Jackson. The Janet Jackson vibes are real! Also, her track "Thug Cry" reminds me of a song Ashanti would have made in the early 2000's. "Cold Sweat" is probably the song that stands out the most to me. It was produced by Sango and has a trippy and dark feel and a relevant subject matter. In this song, she expresses how the pressure of fame isn't for everyone, and how she feels anxious and is weary of fake friends. There's also a phenomenal balled called "Bated Breath' that is an expression of fear of vulnerability and intimate love and affection. She has a number of interludes, and one in particular is a song that she wrote and recorded when she was seven years old. It's called "Deep In The Night", and it's quite deep because she's a little girl singing about how she feels alone and wants to stay close to someone. Tinashe's weird, but in a good way which is why I mess with her the long way. Know what I'm saying? So, if you enjoy Sade, Ashanti, Beyonce, Janet Jackson, or even Britney Spears, you'll surely enjoy Aquarius like I did!
